Lubricant: How Much, Where and When to Reapply

A no-nonsense guide to water-based and silicone lube for vaginal sex, anal play, toys and condoms.

Published: 20 June 2026 · Saudi Arabia

Lube is not only for dryness. It reduces friction, protects sensitive skin and makes hands, toys and penetration feel smoother. Using too little and waiting until sex hurts defeats the point.

Apply it before friction starts

Put a small amount on the vulva or anus and another amount along the penis, fingers or toy. Spread it with the hand. Add more as soon as movement feels sticky, hot or draggy.

Natural lubrication changes during sex because of hormones, stress, medication and session length. Needing more lube does not mean a person is not aroused.

Match the lube to the activity

  • Water-based: compatible with most condoms and toys, easy to wash, may need reapplication.
  • Silicone-based: lasts longer and works well for shower sex or anal play, but check compatibility with silicone toys.
  • Avoid oils with latex condoms because oil can weaken latex.
  • Avoid fragranced or warming products if either partner has sensitive skin.

Anal play needs more, not less

The anus does not self-lubricate. Use generous lube, start small and reapply often. Pain is not a sign to push harder. Stop, add lube and reduce size or speed.

If burning continues after stopping, wash off the product and discontinue use. Persistent irritation needs medical advice.

Adapt intensity to the body in front of you

A technique is useful only when the receiving partner can comfortably guide it. Start below the intensity you expect to use, ask for a simple comparison such as softer or firmer, and keep a successful rhythm stable long enough to judge it.

Sharp pain, burning, numbness, freezing or pulling away are reasons to stop rather than signals to push through. Add lubrication, reduce depth or pressure, change position, or leave the activity for another time.

Judge the result by comfort and communication

No movement guarantees orgasm or the same response on every occasion. Fatigue, stress, medication, privacy and arousal can all change sensation. Treat feedback as the outcome measure and keep what feels good instead of trying to complete every step.

For consenting adults. Stop any activity that causes pain, fear or discomfort.
